How Do Leaders Inspire Continuous Improvement at Work

How Do Leaders Inspire Continuous Improvement at WorkHow Do Leaders Inspire Continuous Improvement at WorkIf youre still in the same role in two years, Ive failed. This statement was made by a Vice President to an employee who had taken the job working for him right out of college. This statement had a big impact on the employee. He had never thought that helping employees grow and develop aspart of the role of a leader. Now, this man was speaking specifically to a young, new employee- a new grad taking on his first professional job. Its elendlage practical or wise to think that every person is ready to move on within each two year period. Higher Level Jobs Take Longer to Learn for Employee Continuous Improvement The higher the job level, the longer you need to stay in the job before moving up the ladder. Otherwise, youre not ready for the demands of the next level. But, regardless of the level of employees, leaders should always look for opportunities to help their employees mov e to that next level. The concept of continuous improvement isnt just about increased responsibility and promotions, though. Continuous improvement is about every aspect of your career and work life- and your personal life. While every employee is responsible for improving their own life and career, if you want to progress to a senior leadership role, you need to focus on improving more than just your own work. Inspiring Continuous Improvement From Your Employees Continuous improvement is not just about getting youremployees promoted (although that is definitely part of it), its about improving their performance in their current job. It is also about changing the job and their responsibilities as they improve- so that they can continue to grow. The latter is more complicated. You need the same tasks accomplished, no matter how long the employee doing them has been in the job. But, you or the employee can always discover a better way to do a task. Helping your employees learn tha t better way will make your department look better. The improved process will make your employees feel better about themselves and prepare them for a promotion into a different job, even a lateral move. Some managers dont want their best employees to move on to different jobs- after all, good employees are difficult to redistributionspolitik. While this feeling is completely understandable, if your employees dont feel that they have the opportunity for continuous improvement, youll lose your best employees anyway. You just wont have any control or say in the matter. If you create a culture where improvement is expected and then rewarded with raises or promotions (eitherin place promotionsor promotions into new jobs), youll attract the very type of employees you love- the hard workers who are driven to improve and succeed. Continuous Improvement of Your Department Continuous improvement is not just about developing the employees, its about developing your department and responsib ilities, too. (At the same time, these activities will also develop your employees.) You need to constantly ask these questions. Is this the best way to do this task?Is there something that were not doing that we need to do?Is there something that we are doing that we need to stop? All three of these questions, when asked regularly, can lead to a continuously improved department or business function. Heres how to ask these continuous improvement questions. Question Is This the Best Way to Do This Task? Sometimes tasks are performed one way just because thats how the task has always been done. A manager might ask himself, Ive asked myself that question three times already, why on earth would I find a better way now? The answer may be that new technology has been created. But, you may also be asking the wrong person- try asking the employee who is responsible for the task. Keep up with professional publications- make sure that the employees also have access. You cant spend your whole life trying to find the holy grail ofproject perfectionism, but when an employee has a suggestion about how to improve things- listen. She may be right Question What Are We Not Doing that We Need to Do? Even when youre feeling overworked, you cant improve if youre not asking this question. What activities will not only help your clients or customers but will help develop your employees as well? You can become more efficient and better prepared to handle the future. If youre not looking for better ways to produce work, you may lose out. For instance, once Kodak was the king of film. When digital photos were introduced, Kodak managers didnt say, Hey, we should produce digital photos. Instead, they focused on their film. The result? Well, when was the last time you used film? Someone should have said, We need to focus on digital. What Are We Doing that We Should Not Do? This question isnt asked nearly often enough. An old story tells about a newly married young woman who buys a ham, cu ts off both ends of the ham, plops it in the pan and sticks it in the oven. Why did you cut off the ends of the ham? the husband asks. This is how you make ham, she says. You always cut off the ends. He pushes her a little more so she asks her mom, Why do you cut off the ends of a ham before baking it? The mom replies, Thats how my mother taught me to make a ham. The two of them go to grandma and inquire. Grandma says, My pan was too small to hold a whole ham. You can laugh at this silly story, but you may have activities that you do in your job that are done for reasons that no longer exist. A report that no one uses. A process that was replaced by an app. Asking this question regularly can bring about the spirit ofimprovementthat you need for a successful department. When you take the idea of continuous improvement seriously, youll begin to focus on making work better. for you and your employees. This means that you can create a better job without even updating your resume. Your e mployees will thank you for their continuous improvement opportunities as well. Becoming the Best Employee Ever Is Actually Pretty Simple

Becoming the Best Employee Ever Is Actually Pretty Simple I dont have any employees, elendhave Ibeen an employee myself in years. However, I am a consultant. And as a consultant, I hear a lot.Not too long ago, in a seminar on menschenwrdig resources management, the discussion turned to what makes an employee valuable. The topic intrigued mebecause the managers in that room were from two generations baby boomers and Gen. X-ers. Thecomplaints of managers from both generations seemed to focusa lot on the way in which millennials approach work. The word that kept popping up was entitlement According to many people, millennials seem to feel entitled to great benefits and flexible work hours, but they lack any dedication to their jobs and companies.I leftthat seminar with a goal in mind to survey all of the organizations with whom I have worked over the past several years and ask them to list the most important qualities of their best employees. I had hoped there would be common threads that united great employees across industries and organizations and, indeed, there were. Here are the topeight qualities that respondents to my survey listed as characteristics of their best employees. I hope that job seekers will have a look at this listandreflect on how these traitswill help them find success in their careers1. CharacterTo say someone has character can mean a lot of things, but here is how the managers with whom I spoke defined it First and foremost, characteris honesty.A number of the respondents added sub-traitslike trustworthiness and upstanding.Managers want employees who stick by their ethical principles and never discarding them for the sake of expediency.2. DependabilityDependability boils down to trust. Employers want to be able to trust their employees to fulfill theirresponsibilities without lots of hand-holding, coddling, orcontinual monitoring. One of the complaints Ive often heard isthat millennials seem to want to work o n their own schedules, but they dont realizetheir schedulesimpact the schedules of their fellow team members.Employers wantemployees who understand thatdeadlines exist for a reason and that they haveresponsibilities to their colleagues.3. BroadSkill SetsThis was the only trait among the top eight that related to hard skills. Of course, employees who have the skills needed for a specific position are good candidates for that position. Employees who keep learning and broadening their skill sets are even more valuable. One respondent used a real estate analogy to explain the importance of employee skill setsWhen we buy a home, we do things over the years that will increase the value of that home. We make improvements. Managers want employees who work to increase their own value to an organization by adding to their skill sets and bringing mini-skills to the table as well.4. Self-DisciplineThis trait is of extreme value. When an employee can be given a long-term task and has the ability to tackle it on their own and meet all the deadlines with no prodding, a manager has one less thing on to worry about.Managers want to see employees who can manage their time well and who will stick with something, no matter how tedious or how challenging it may be. They want people who, when facing a task, will not give in to distractions or find excuses.5. AttentivenessThis one was a bit of a surprise. I did not think that it would be among the top eight, but sure enough, it is.Employers like employees who are attentive listeners, especially during meetings and conversations. Many employees are so benton making themselves positions heard that they fail to listen. Miscommunication and misunderstandings are the result, and these are never good.6. InitiativeThis was high on everyones list and also a cause for complaint during the seminar. The employee who fulfills the responsibilities outlined in their job description brings value to an organization, but the employee who goes above a nd beyond to improve the organization overall is absolutely invaluable. These employees are continually engaged at work and are busier than most of their colleagues because they think outside the box.7. DedicationEmployees who are dedicated to their own success tend also to be dedicated to the success of the organization provided that they are not unethical in their pursuit of personal success, of course.8. DiligenceThis brde trait relates to many others on this list, and that is why it is bringing up the rear. Diligence, according to respondents to my survey, means seeing things through and not giving up when things see insurmountable.Employees who exhibit diligence do not have thatsense of entitlementthatmany of the managers in the seminar complained about. Instead, these employees feel that they owe their diligence to the companies that their diligence is what earns themthe benefitsthey desire.Anumber of other traits popped up duringmy survey, but these top eight encapsulate all the most important aspects of what it means to be a great employee. Think of this as a checklist the more value you can bring to an organization through these traits, themore career success you will see.

Why Bringing Your Demo to a Record Label Is a Bad Idea

Why Bringing Your Demo to a Record Label Is a Bad IdeaWhy Bringing Your Demo to a Record Label Is a Bad IdeaWhen youre eager to for the decision makers at a record label to listen to your demo, the idea of stopping by their office, CD in hand, is tempting. But is it ever a good idea? A resounding NO. Why Bringing Your Demo to a Record Label Is a Bad Idea In almost every instance, dropping by a record label office unannounced to give them your demo is going to backfire and heres why Its uncomfortable No one at the label wants to be subjected to listening to your demo in front of you, and they dont want to accept it from you in person either. Its leid because of an uppity attitude nor is it a reflection on your music. Rather, everyone at the label understands how much your demo means to you, and the vast majority of the demos any label hears will be turned down. Giving the label the space to judge your demo on their own terms will work in your favor. Putting them on the spot will n ot. It might not be an office This one only applies to small, indie labels, but you might be surprised how many of your favorite music businesses are operating out of someones bedroom or garage. Turning up at someones house? Awkward. And a little scary...for both of youThe receptionist is ready for you On the other end of the spectrum, major labels have front desk receptionist who have dealt with people bearing demos thousands of times. Youre not getting past them. Plus, a vast majority of labels that have receptionists dont accept unsolicited demos. Youll be remembered for the wrong reasons It might seem like visiting a record label with your demo shows some spunk and go get em attitude. It may seem like a great way to make an impression. You might not be forgotten. And youre unlikely to be remembered fondly. Record Label Demo Policies Almost every record label has a demo policy clearly listed on their website- follow it to the letter. The demo policy isnt there to discourage y ou. It exists to establish an ?efficient method to deal with the demos that pour into even the smallest labels. The label wants to give your demo gets the chance it deserves, or alternatively, to save you from wasting your time approaching a label that cant be of help. Here youll also find acceptable demo formats (eg, CD, mp3 clips), their mailing address, the name of a specific demo (AR) rep to whom you should address your package, and the follow-up guidelines indicating whether its acceptable for you to call or email. Now, the caveat Every rule has exceptions. You may happen upon a label that invites drop-in visitors, and there undoubtedly a musician somewhere, who got a deal by bursting into a label office with a demo. However, your best bet with demos is to stick to the guidelines.

5 Ways to Spin Your Next Team Meeting

5 Ways to Spin Your Next Team Meeting 5 Ways to Spin Your Next Team Meeting So, how do you create excitement for the weekly routine? I thought youd never ask. Below are five ways to spice up your next team or department meeting and, hopefully, bring a new level of interest and enthusiasm to your employees andwell, you.RelocateMost often, team meetings are in the same place at the same time on the same day. Its already becoming redundant just writing about it. Why not move your next meeting to a different location, preferably outside of the office. Try a nearby Starbucks or caf that allots the needed space for you and your team to gather. Employees can purchase their favorite caf treats (or you can provide them as an added bonus) to get them in the relaxed, loose mood and away from the normal, boring office setting. Sometimes its just nice to get away.Show, Dont TellMost meetings consist of talking. As a matter of fact Im not sure how youd conduct a successful meeting without commun icating. Lets take the norm out of your next gathering and cut down on so much talking. Demonstrate ideas, concepts or new initiatives to employees instead of outright telling them about these things. For example, if lack of communication is an issue to discuss on the agenda, give your team puzzle pieces and split them into groups. Have each team work together to rebuild the puzzle (a small one, of course). Afterward, explain how important communication is for the successof the team, justhow it wasto build the puzzle. Team members can also discuss how they communicated and why during the activity to ensure an active discussion. Showing versus telling takes the boring out of listening. (whew)Order InDo you usually provide food during team meetings? Even if its a short meeting, offering refreshments such as fruit, tea and snacks, helps. You can even put a theme on your weekly meetings to liven up the attendees. Why not have Taco Tuesdays or French fry Fridays? Or you can change the fo od schriftart each meeting. One week can be Italian, the next Greek, the next American, and so forth. Food always brings in the crowd.Share the PowerThe boss usually runs the meeting, after all, thats one of the things he or she is paid to do. Try sharing the power during meetings. Maybe one meeting out of each month a different team member has the responsibility of running the meeting. Workers can send the employee items to put on the agenda and he or she will have full range to run the show. This can engage your team members and help them feel like one unit with equal parts. Of course, at the end of the day you are the boss, but sharing a little power every now and then can help workers feel dependable and valuable while simultaneously valuing your role as a manager.Surprise, SurpriseWho doesnt love a surprise? Bring in guest speakers or key people from the company every now and then to address staff during weekly meetings. The best surprise of all? Cancel the meeting
